If you have been good, all of your clean up is
wrapped up and your compost piles are full. But if
you're one of those procrastinators you may still have a
little chopping and raking left to do. This month is a
great time for planting your favorite small fruits and
berries. Asparagus and artichokes should put in an
appearance also. Holiday greenery can be harvested from
the yard… junipers, pines, redwood, holly, magnolia,
pittosporum and laurels all provide long lasting
garland. While you're out there, use the opportunity to
do some light pruning if you haven't already done so.
Thin and shape deciduous and evergreen trees and
shrubs. Fruit trees, vines and roses will be the better
for it. Your dormant spraying schedule must be
maintained because fruit trees and roses can host over
wintering guests that will dine on the first tender
shoots of spring. Those special holiday stars are here
too. No, not Dasher and Dancer, but poinsettias,
orchids, Christmas cactus, living Christmas trees,
hollies with berries, beautiful topiaries and living
herbal wreaths and trees.
Living Christmas Tree care is not that difficult if
you keep these simple things in mind:
These trees do not tolerate indoor conditions for
a prolonged period of time - no more than 2 weeks.
Enjoy them on porch or patio as long as possible.
Hose them down and give them a thorough drink of
water the day before you bring them inside.
Use a plastic saucer under container to protect
floor surface.
Place in a cool location away from heating vents
and use cool burning lights.
After the holiday you can plant them in the yard
or grow them in a container to use year after year.
Living Christmas Trees can also be gifted after the
holidays to parks or schools to enrich and beautify the
environment.

Inland Region [Zone 14] and Central Valley [Zones 7 - 9]
What to Plant:
Hardy evergreens, azaleas, camellias, & rhododendrons
and shrubs. Bare-root roses, deciduous trees, fruit
trees, berries, & grapes, as they become available.
Vegetables:
Bare-root artichokes, asparagus, rhubarb & strawberries,
packaged fruit trees.
Maintenance:
Transplanting of large trees and shrubs are best done at
this time to minimize shock. Any overgrown perennials
that haven't gone dormant yet should be divided. Wait
awhile before dividing plants like delphinium that are
subject to root rot. Deciduous fruit trees and roses
should be defoliated and ready for pruning. Clean up,
shape, remove dead branches and thin out crowded centers
of ornamental trees and shrubs. Apply dormant spray to
leafless plants now. Protect topsoil areas with 2-3"
mulch. Use manure, compost, bark or similar product, so
winter rains will not beat it into a pavement hardness.
Heavy mulches of manure or compost over the vegetable
and flowerbeds will add to fertility and make spring
planting an easier job.
Watering:
If rainfall is light this month continue routine
watering. Dry cool winds can weaken plants by causing
dehydration. Dehydrated plants are more likely to die
during a freeze.
What to Plant:
For the time being, planting time is over for you.
Maintenance:
December pruning should be a process by now: mild
shaping of trees & shrubs to prepare them for winter;
removing large limbs and major work is best postponed
until danger of freezing is past. Apply strong dormant
spray to leafless plants now. Check stored bulbs for rot
or shriveling. Make sure ropes or ties are not cutting
into trees or shrubs. For icy walkways in the garden use
sand instead of salt. Salt is damaging to most plants,
but be aware that sand can mar wood or tiled surfaces.
Check container plants for watering and any other dry
spots in the garden.
